Manufacturing, Material &
Metallurgy Committee Meeting Minutes
Material Processing Technology, LLC
MMM Committee Meeting Minutes
Meeting Minutes Overview
In Attendance = 24 (see
appendix I for a complete list)
- This year the number of papers and
conference registrations has increased substantially.
-All the technical glitches
associated with web tool will be worked out by July 2008 and significant
improvements are to be seen this coming year.
- Webinars will be
conducted on the new web tool, on various subjects can be found online.
- IGTI will be giving one
4K scholarship this year to an undergraduate or graduate student
working on GT related work.
-The financial situation
with ASME and IGTI has been improved over the past year. IGTI is considering
increasing the number of scholarships available for students to conduct gas
turbine related research or attend conferences.
-The Mechanical Engineering
Magazine (www.memagazine.org) will be published more frequently
and new announcements can be found in the magazine or web site.
-All ASME technical papers
from 1956 – 2005 has been digitized and an index can be purchased online
($150.00).
-When renewing or
registering for ASME membership, be sure to designate Gas Turbine (IGTI) as the
primary interest area (Code 22). By doing so, 25% of the registration fee will
be redistributed to IGTI to help offset administrative expenses.
-There will be a new award
for 2009 to acknowledge individual contributing to industrial GT technology.
Nomination is being called and the approval process follows similar procedures
as other awards.
- Paul thanked all the volunteers for
organizing this year’s program.
- He announced the best
paper (“Fretting fatigue damage of…..”) award for 2007
-Summary of the MMM
sessions this year in
-Paul presented the
statistics of the papers from all committees. Overall the number of papers
recommended for Journal of Gas Turbine Engineering remained the same as in 2007, however, due to the increase in the total number of
papers, the percentage has reduced. Number of papers within the MMM committee
has increased in 2008 but the % of that accepted to journal has been reduced.
It was suggested that the session chairs communicate the paper review
procedures and the standard for journal quality paper to reviewers when
assigning the papers for review next year.
-It is important that the
reviewers are aware of the timeline for the review process since there is
limited number of days between the completion of the review and author
notification.
-He
recommended that all session chairs take the webinar course designed for
session chairs.
-The new review process for
2009 will incorporate automatic notifications to the reviewers as soon as the
revised paper is submitted. There will be options for reviewers to select
“rereview needed” or “re-review not
needed” for 2009.
-There had been issues with
Form 1903 and the NY office was responsible for some last minute problems. This
is being resolved by the IGTI and ASME admin.
-Thanked Paul for
organizing the MMM committed for the past two years. -Self introduction
followed by other committee volunteers. -Xiao Huang, Associate Professor at the
Department of Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering, is the
incoming vice chair of the MMM Committee -Presented the current sessions titles
and opened the floor for suggestions for new session themes for 2009 in
-It was suggested a new
joint panel session (with ceramic committee) on coating life predication would
be of great interest to many. Jeff Smith (MPT-LLC) and Tania Bhatia (UTRC)
agreed to spearhead this session.
-Swami attended the
Structures and Dynamics committee meeting and they are open to exploring joint
sessions with the MMM committee
-Another main area of
interest was to introduce a panel session on combustion component repair and lifing. Doug Nagy (Liburdi)
volunteered to solicit speakers and chair this session and look into the
possibility of a joint session with combustion committee.
-The subject on the tribological properties (fretting, wear, erosion…) of
coatings was identified to be of importance. Detailed plan is to be followed up
after the meeting. -Furthermore, possible theme on material corrosion and
fatigue properties in micro-gas turbine will be looked as potential joint
session with microturbine committee.
-Other panel session topics
suggested: hot section repair, replacement part (new or refurbished) in
conjunction with electric power committee, engine fleet topics, green
manufacturing process….
-On the technical sessions,
the theme subjects are very much dependent upon the papers received. However,
the organizers could be proactive and solicit papers from their
contacts/network.
-Volunteers were asked to
sign up for the sessions of their interest (See appendix II and III)
-Further concluding
comments by the chair: ƒ Need to increase member participation in the MMM
committee ƒ Increase the % of papers accepted for journal publication
ƒ Increase the number of international participants ƒ ASME membership
is required for committee chair and vice chair positions ƒ Requirements
for officer position: participation in committee meetings and session
organization experience; interest and commitment
in advancing the mission of the MMM committee
-Comments made by Ron Natole indicating that the description of the new
industrial GT technology award follows the mission statement of the MMM
committee to acknowledge
individual made significant contribution to
the “development, processing, refurbishment and durability of gas turbine
materials and component”. -The registration fee is high for the current
year. The conference may be reduced to 3-4 days
instead to reduce the cost. Some who wishes
to attend multiple sessions did not agree. -Some conference rooms were too
small for the large audience -Rooms should be equipment with adequate AC.
